This quarter real coin was minted in the Central American country of Guatemala. Guatemala was the seat of the Mayan civilization until the Conquistadors arrived in the 16th century and claimed Guatemala for Spain. Spain ruled the country until 1821 when Guatemala declared its independence from Spain and became a state in the Central American Republic. In the year 1840 Guatemala became truly independent as its own Republic. The silver coin has the castle on the obverse with lion on the reverse. This artifact is handset in a sterling silver pendant.
